Chapter 11
Jelly Roll
Outside the room, Marcyâs team was taking their positions around Kimuraâs hotel room door. But then, they started to hear screaming. Marcy and her team exchanged looks, not sure what to make of it. Shrugging, Eyes used a master hotel key to unlock the door. The agents looked to Marcy. She gave the signal. The door opened a crack, only to instantly slam shut.
âYouâre out of moves, Sterling,â Marcy announced. âYou and Beckett are wanted for treason!â
On the other side of the door, Lance was busy extricating himself from under the liquefied Kimura. When he was finally free, he looked out toward the balcony. There sitting on the ledge was the flock! Lovey, Jeff, and the scrawny one with no name.
âWe gotta go! Now!â Lance shouted.
âNo! Donât leave me like this,â Kimura pleaded, watching Lance and Walter run for the balcony.
âSorry. Iâm so sorry,â Walter said, looking back at Kimura. At least Kimura wasnât mortally wounded like Lance had planned. He would solidify in a couple of hours.
Lance and Walter ran toward the open balcony door, looking for an escape route. They watched the flock fly from their balcony over to another thirty feet away.
âWe gotta get to that balcony,â Lance said, immediately understanding what they were trying to tell them. âWeâre going to have to parkour.â
âWhat??â Walter said.
âCat pass! Tic Tac! Jelly roll!â Lance said, explaining.
âDesk lamp! Flimflam! Bottlecap! I donât know what any of that means,â Walter replied. He could name random things too.
Lance hopped onto Walterâs backpack as everyone in the hotel room began to hear beep . . . beep . . . beep . . .
KABOOM!
The door blasted open, and Marcy and her crew toppled to the ground over Kimura. His body jiggled from the impact.
âUgh!â Marcy exclaimed.
Kimura was, as you would expect, a bit embarrassed. âHi.â
âWhat theâwhat happened to you?!â Marcy said, looking at the pile of goo that was Kimura. She began to gag.
âOh, donât do that,â Kimura said. âYouâre gonna make me . . . HUUUURGGEHH!â
While Kimura and Marcy dry heaved together, Lance and Walter were on the balcony. It was now or never.
âYou gotta go!â Lance said to Walter. Marcy and her team still didnât know that Lance was a pigeon. They were going to find Walter here and take him into custody. Walter was a sitting duck here, not Lance.
Walter climbed over the railing, stumbling and sliding along the edge. He cradled pigeon Lance in his arm. Fighting every survival instinct in his body, he curled up on the ledge like a turtle. Not moving.
âCome on, Walter,â Lance said. âYou can do this. Itâs a physics problem!â
Suddenly, it dawned on Walter. âItâs just basic physics!â
Walter did some quick calculations on his smart watch. It began to project mathematical diagrams of the moves he needed to make in order to get down to the atrium below safely.
âYouâre right. We can do this!â Walter said, full of confidence.
âBeckett!â Lance and Walter turned to see Marcy charging out onto the balcony.
âWe can do this,â Walter repeated.
